Home Air Conditioning Maintenance Tips

Nowadays, the use of home air conditioners is on the rise, especially as the temperature begins to heat up as summer approaches. People use them at their fullest when needed, however, tend not to take proper care of the A/C in the off seasons. If you want your home air conditioner to be in good working order and have a durable life, you really should take some precautions regarding its maintenance. If your air conditioner is not maintained properly, it can essentially break down causing you to spend a significant amount of money on repairs. Home Air conditioning maintenance tips can be an easy task to perform, and also a very important one. It won’t only increase the working life of your air conditioning system but will also help keep a hold on your electricity bills.

Before following any air conditioner maintenance tips, always read the instruction manual for your ac unit carefully. The product manual contains necessary maintenance information provided by the manufacturer, which will help enable you to understand more about the important parts and components of your air conditioner system. After you are more informed and feel comfortable about all the a/c components, then your ac maintenance tips are as follows:

Air Filter Replacement and Thermostat’s Temperature

Be sure to replace the ac system air filters as per the recommendations given by the manufacturer in the product manual. The more inexpensive the filter, the more frequently you’ll need to replace it. A good rule of thumb is to check your ac filters once every month as there are some filters which are supposed to be cleaned or replaced once in a month or every quarter. In addition, try to maintain the a/c system thermostat’s level at a constant temperature, whether you are at home or not. If the temperature remains the same constantly, the air conditioner system will have to work less hard to provide the cooling. When you increase the temperature on the thermostat as you leave the house and then adjust the temperature back down upon returning home, the AC System will have to consume more power to cool the home back down.

Cooling Coils and Air Vents

Every spring or at least once per year, make sure the cooling coils are cleaned and checked. They may be cleaned by putting water on them using mild pressure. But make sure that the air conditioning system is switched off while doing so. Also be certain that some kind of absorbent protection is present under the return air vent. If the air conditioner is not in a well-kept state, water may come out of the air vents.

Compressor

The air conditioner compressor component also should be kept away from dust and dirt. You can use a water hose for getting rid of the dust. By doing so, you enable the airflow to work more expeditiously across the cooling fins on the component. When the Air conditioning system is not needed, as in winter, simply cover the ac compressor with a cloth which will prevent dust from accumulating. You should also examine if the hose connections have leaks, and the condensate tube is able to drain freely.

Also check if the air conditioner panels are fastened tightly. If they are not, simply fasten the screws. In the case of window Air Conditioners, it’s recommended that you remove them when they’re not needed for months. Window ACs should be positioned in windows which are least exposed to direct sunlight. Those which are placed in shade need less power to function effectively. You may use plants or shrubs to shade the Air Conditioner, but ensure that they do not block the airflow.

Along with all these home air conditioning maintenance tips, you should also get the air conditioner system checked and serviced by a professional technician from time to time. Proper maintenance will help reduce repair costs and also extend the life of your air conditioning system.
